Twelve places to visit in co. Donegal in 2023

By Elena T.

Visiting Donegal gives you endless walking, hiking, beaches and cycling opportunities. Unfortunately, seeing them all is difficult, especially when you have a week or two to do this. This is why we prepared for you our 2023 Visit Donegal recommendation list with places all around the county that will take your breath away.

1. Tullan strand, Bundoran

Being a part of theWild Atlantic Way discovering points and a fantastic place for surfing, this beach is a beloved destination for many people. The car park is large but often overcrowded and also paid.

Anyway, standing on the top where the metal Wild Atlantic Way sign is and looking at the massive strand below is unspeakable joy. I recommend walking down the path forward, Bundoran and seeing the fairy bridges - a natural phenomenon. For people who love walking even more - continue to Bundoran beach, and explore the shoreline and the town.

2. Assaranca Waterfall, Ardara

The drive to this waterfall can be challenging as the road is narrow in places. However, if you are lucky to visit this waterfall after heavy rains when the lake that feeds it overflows, you may not fear what your mates say next to you. Even in summertime, this waterfall impresses with its footage.

If you reach the waterfall, drive a bit more along that road and get to Maghera Beach and its caves - a stunning place but make sure you are there during low tide. The car park there is paid for (3 euros last time) so make sure you have change. Summertime feels like a tropical island.

3. Dungloe River Walk

If you have small children with you or have a stop for an hour or two in Dungloe - take advantage of that fairy Riverwalk. It has many surprises for young and old, is easy to walk, and is suitable for wee bikes, scooters and buggies.

4. Bunbeg beach

I will be surprised if you haven't seen a picture of Bad Eddy - an old, nearly composed boat lying in the sands with a stunning view around. If you know what I'm talking about and want to take such a picture yourself - this is the place you need.

Ensure you have a low tide when you go there; otherwise, the picture may be postponed or taken from a distance. Do not hesitate to explore all the paths and see that place from as many sides as possible. It is worth it!

5. Errigal

This is a significant point for Gweedore. The highest mountain in Donegal promises the best view of the land (if you are lucky to have a clear day). A new build path leads to the top, so the difficulty level is low to medium. If you decide to climb it, remember your hat; the wind hits hard there.

6. Glebe House and Gallery

This beautiful garden is a hidden gem between the hills of Donegal. With lots of history and the hard work of many people, this place is now free to visit and is not-to-miss for anyone who wants to hear the beating heart of Donegal. There is also a lovely tea room and art gallery.

If you visit it and have young children - have a drive to Churchill playground. It is just a 5-minute drive, but it has one of the most beautiful views from a playground in Donegal.

You can also go from the other side and take a Garthan lake walk or explore the land up to St. Colmcille's cross.

7.Lough Salt View Point

High in the mountain, this absolutely fantastic viewpoint will show you one of the best sunsets you can see in Donegal. Enjoy this tremendous scene of Sheephaven Bay, Doe Castle, Carrigart Beach, Muckish Mountain and the Glen. Remember your insect repellent if you don't want to be a dinner.

8. LurgabrackLinkNature Reserve

This is a must-to-see place in Donegal for everyone who is not afraid of walking and wind. It is a fabulous walk through a forest and dunes and finishes on a stunning, wild, never-sleeping beach. The car park is 2 minutes away from Dunfanaghy.

9. Ards Friary

Usually, Ards Forest Park is the most popular destination, but if you want to try a different way to explore the area, go to Ards Friary. There is a large car park, toilets and a tea room.

You can walk along the shore to a tiny beach, beautiful cliffs and the hidden Lucky Shell beach.

Remember that many ticks are around, so stay away from the grass and check yourself and your dogs once you are home.

10. Great Pollet Sea Arch, Fanad

Being a long-time secret walk for the locals today, this place is visitor friendly - there is a new build car park and a fantastic boardwalk that will take you down to the sea arch. I have no words to describe the beauty of that natural phenomenon, so take your time and go there - you won't be sorry.

11. Buncrana Heritage trail

From the pier to the swan park, and if you are a good walker even beyond it, this shore path is a fantastic exploration of the area. The walk has lots of history boards and benches. It is easy to walk, a buggy-friendly path with little access to the beach.

If you decide to have your walk longer - go to Buncrana Castle and the stunning beaches after - Porthaw and Stragill Beach.

For people with children, Buncrana playground is an excellent stop with lots of facilities for the children and a beautiful view for everyone.

12. Moville Shore pathLink

From the other side of Inishowen, the beautiful town of Moville offers you an incredible journey along the shore, nearly to Greencastle. It is easy to walk, buggy friendly and stunning.

There is a fantastic playground where the path begins for families with kids.

It is only possible to mention some places worth visiting in Donegal even though I have lived for more than six years in Letterkenny and have yet to see many places I want. However, this list may give you some ideas and help you to plan the best for your trip around this incredible land.
