Built-in memory of Ruaidhrí Mac Suibhne's eldest son, who died in 1508, it was the last pre-Reformation Carmelite friary in the country. Today, the Abbey is a popular site for visitors interested in learning about the history of the area.

Nearby, the Battery is another interesting heritage site, located just a short distance from the Abbey. While it is not open to the public, the Battery provides a great background for photos and is an interesting historical feature.


The beach is an important site in Irish history, with the Flight of the Earls taking place here in 1607. The flight marked the end of the Gaelic order in Ireland and the beginning of the Plantation of Ulster.


Getting to Rathmullan Beach


Rathmullan Beach is easily accessible by car or public transportation. The village is located just 25 minutes from Letterkenny and an hour from Derry City. During the summer months, a ferry operates between Rathmullan and Buncrana, a town on the opposite side of Lough Swilly.
