Discovering the Hidden Gems of Donegal: Exploring the Beauty of Murder Hole Beach

Location and Accessibility

Murder Hole Beach is a hidden treasure located on the northern side of the Rosguill peninsula near Downings. Although it was previously difficult to access, a farmer has recently built a large car park and wide track, making it much easier and safer to visit. The journey begins from a large car park located on the northwest corner of Melmore Family Caravan Park, with a reasonable fee of 5 euros.

The Scenic Trail to the Beach

From the car park, visitors can follow a wide, rough gravel track leading around the farmland to the beach. Although the path is steep in spots, the beautiful landscapes of Crocknasleigh Mountain views to Horn Head, and a few lakes, farm animals, old cottage-style buildings, and rocky fences make it worth the effort. However, the path is unsuitable for buggies or those with mobility issues. It is also important to note that dogs are not allowed, even on a leash, due to the presence of farm animals.

The Beauty of the Beach

The beach is stunning, with golden sand, high rocks on the east side, and beautiful green hills of the mountain on the west side. Streams cut the sand and run to the water, while rock pools sparkle in the sunlight. Visitors are treated to a beautiful view of the open Atlantic and Horn Head in the distance. However, swimming is not recommended due to the strong currents.

The Hidden Gem of Murder Hole

One of the highlights of the beach is the quiet deep cave known as Murder Hole, which offers a fantastic view of the water. Visitors can find the cave by walking along the cliffs at the back of the beach.

Conclusion

Murder Hole Beach is a hidden gem that offers visitors a unique and breathtaking experience. With its stunning views, scenic trails, and hidden cave, it is a must-visit for anyone exploring Donegal. Although the journey can be challenging, the beauty of the beach and the thrill of discovering a hidden treasure make it all worthwhile.
