Astelleen Burn Waterfall

Astelleen Burn Waterfall

Glenveagh National Park

by Elena T.

Have you ever heard of the stunning waterfall tucked away in Glenveagh National Park?

Though the park sees thousands of visitors each year, the crowds tend to congregate in the castle gardens, making for a noisy atmosphere. But if you venture beyond the gardens and continue along the Lough Beagh trail through Mullangore woods, you'll come across a hidden gem after about 3 kilometres: Astelleen Burn waterfall.

Though the road to the waterfall can be rocky and bumpy, it's still accessible to buggies and bicycles. When you arrive, you'll find a serene and peaceful spot with few other people around. There's a bench where you can sit and enjoy the view from a distance, or if you're feeling adventurous, you can walk through the grass by the river to get a closer look. However, be mindful of the ticks that can be found in the grass.

While you won't be able to get up close to Astelleen Burn waterfall, it's still an impressive sight to behold from afar. After taking in the views, you can either continue your walk until the road brings you up the hills to R254 or head back to the castle to explore the gardens and enjoy the tearoom after your long walk.
